Happy 2012 everyone, hope the silly season was silly, fun, relaxing and renewing!

Its my first day back in Brisbane after holidays home to NZ, what a lovely surprise to find that myself and some lovely community members have hit the front page of Brisbanes’ West Side News. In an effort to promote Volunteer work in the local community I was approached by Communify QLD where I do regular Volunteer work to appear on the front page of the first copy of Brisbane West Side News. A successful Christmas celebration with children from LuWQ and the RAQ Inc.

December seen the very first christmas party for the children of the Liberian United Women of Queensland (LUWQ) and yet another year of Christmas cheer for the children of the Rwandan association. Approximately 90 children aged between 3months – 13 years received gifts from the 100 Gifts for Christmas collection. Made possible by the combined efforts of Time on Your Hands Director Bronwyn Tutty, LuWQ co-ordinator Joyce Taylor, Rwandan Association director Angéline Mujawamariya and all the wonderful individuals and organisations who kindly donated both gifts and time towards this wonderful cause. A particularly big thank you to volunteer supporters Santa Seano his helper Dave and Stephanie Hanrahan for their amazing energy and enthusiasm at the Christmas parties. Big thanks for creating lasting Christmas memories for both children and adults at Christmas time 2011.

100 Gifts for Christmas in the media

This week the ’100 Gifts for Kids at Christmas’ story was fortunate enough to make it into local Brisbane newspaper, ‘City South News’ (printed by Quest Newspapers). Quest Newspapers were delighted to hear about this project and were keen as mustard to organise a photo shoot and write up a bit of a good news story. A nice change from some of the stories we read in our local papers these days.

100 Gifts for kids at Christmas gains momentum

The 100 Gifts for multi-cultural kids at Christmas collection has taken off! From the first email sent on 01 Nov 2011 till today almost 70 gifts have been received. There are more being delivered throughout this week and next. Gifters’ and volunteers have generously provided gifts, picked up and delivered gifts, wrapped gifts and there is still more support to come to finalise this project. People in the community at large have provided their time to the project and made it a success. At this stage with no funding support from any organisation but simply some passion, time and goodwill we will collect all the gifts we need.

Stay tuned for an update after Sunday 11th Dec 2011 sees the first gift presentation….all we need now is a Santa!

This Christmas, are you looking for a way to show your child or a child you know just how fortunate they are?

Bronwyn Tutty from Time on Your Hands invites you and your child or children to help make a happier Christmas for 100 underprivileged multi-cultural children living in Brisbane through the ’100 Gifts for Christmas’ initiative. These children are likely to come from families who may struggle to provide their child/children with any Christmas presents this year. It will cost you nothing more than imagination and time.

Melbourne cup fires up at Communify

Communify staff gathered together to share a delicious spread of Prawns, Avocado, salad, strawberries washed down with Champagne and Lindt chocolate to celebrate the annual Melbourne Cup festivities. 30 minutes before the race all staff were sent off to their respective offices to create race day hats/fascinators or head pieces. The only rule was, you need to make something out of the things found in your office…..check out the pictures, there are some very creative and quirky folk floating around at Communify. Check out the pictures, i’m sure you’ll agree!

Advice on buying 2nd hand computer with all the bells and whistles for between $250 – $500!

This has been a week of sharing the ‘bargain love’ with folk with buying a second hand computer and getting it up and running
with all the bells and whistles (Windows operating system, Word Processing, internet access, skype and antivirus etc). For basic computing needs an ex government computer which has been fully refurbished will do the trick nicely. Time on Your Hands offers a service which will complete all the necessary configurations, runs updates etc to get it in good working order for you to take home and use. Keeping busy with Community databases

Bronwyn has been a busy little bee, working on the ‘Whole of Centre Database’ specification document for Communify QLD. The document is now complete and has been sent off to various developers for comment on how their product may meet Communifys operational needs. Bronwyn is also working closely with the Welfare service designing an interim online database which will be used to capture information is currently being tracked manually. This data will then be in a manageable format to load into the ‘Whole of Centre Database’ once it has been implemented.
Time on Your Hands also welcomed Rajni Khanna, work placement student currently doing the CJP program Community Job Plan based out of Sandgate and run by SANDBAG. Rajni will be working with Bronwyn two days per week for 10 weeks and will be supporting Communify, Time on Your Hands and helping out with the weekly Exchange Computer Class. Its a great opportunity for Rajni and awesome support for Communify and Time on Your Hands. Welcome Rajni!
